Assam felt 18 aftershocks till the filing of this report, after the massive 6.4 magnitude earthquake that jolted the state and neighbouring areas at 7.51 am on 28th April. The earthquake, which had its epicentre at Sonitpur district caused much damages across the state, killing two and leaving many injured.
According to the National Center for Seismology, the 18 aftershocks were in the range of 2.3 to 4.7 magnitude in the Richter scale, with epicentres around the original one. The first tremor was the greatest ever felt in the last 50 years. A similar one was felt in 1960.
The highest aftershock was of 4.6, that occurred around 1.20 am, epicenter being Sonitpur.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports of ten injured persons were found till 5:30 pm yesterday- six from Darrang, one Kamrup Metro, one from Nagaon and two from Sonitpur. Further two casualty were reported -one each in Kamrup Metro and Nagaon districts. The cause of death is said to be shock/heart attack around the time of earthquake.
