Tezpur University observed its 30th foundation day on 21st January with hosts of activities. Prof. Dhruba J Saikia, Head, Teaching Learning Centre and the National Resource Centre and Founding Vice Chancellor, Cotton University delivered the foundation day oration as the Chief Guest.
Speaking in front of the august gathering, Prof. Saikia deliberated upon the topic “Building inclusive societies: lessons from astronomy”. Prof. Saikia explained in detail why social integration is needed to create an inclusive society, “We must endeavour to create a society for all”, he said. He further added that societies which are inclusive in nature are stable, safe, just and tolerant. Prof. Saikia cited examples of remarkable stories of women astronomers who have overcome tremendous challenges to unravel and understand the richness of our Universe. “The life stories of both women and men, who have overcome various societal challenges underlie the importance of creating more humane and just and inclusive societies where all may have equal opportunities to contribute and flourish, without any form of discrimination be it on gender, sexual orientation, religion, colour, language, ethnicity, etc., Prof Saikia remarked.
Referencing Dr. BR Ambedkar and Indian constitution, he opined that when the society will start respecting diversity, equality of opportunity and participation of all people, including disadvantaged and vulnerable groups and persons, then only equality and equity will prevail.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya, Vice-Chancellor (Acting), highlighted the journey of Tezpur University towards the pursuit of excellence. He mentioned some of the notable achievements of the University and explained the research and innovation culture of the institution. Reflecting the commendable achievements, Prof. Bhattacharyya however cautioned that the University should not be
complacent and strive for creating a modern centre of higher education and research. “The Govt. of India has brough NEP 2020 policy to usher reforms in educational sector and we must rise to the occasion to bring about necessary changes in our teaching and learning process”, Prof. Bhattacharyya said. He further said that excellence is a journey and the University need to foresee the opportunities as well as challenges.
During the event an automated Wheelchair was donated by Shri Deba Kumar Mishra, the Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Mishra also congratulated Tezpur University for getting the A+ NAAC grading.
The dignitaries also participated in the book release of Dr. Juri Dutta, who has been recently awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for translation 2022. The translated book released on the occasion was originally written by noted Naga writer Temsüla Ao titled-Laburnum For My Head (Assamese translated version- শিৰৰ বাবে এজোপা হালধীয়া সোণাৰু)
During the event 07 faculty members, 03 research scholars and 03 students were awarded Commendation Certificate for bringing awards & accolades to the University.
