On the last day of his three-day tour to Japan, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today held a meeting with representatives from Japan’s leading universities in Tokyo and asked them to explore linkages with Assam based universities; particularly through joint degree courses, student exchange programs and collaboration in research and skilling.

Chief Minister during the meeting also spoke about providing more educational opportunities to the vast community of students from Assam and the rest of the country, as well as creating more pathways for students in Assam to access Japan’s university network.

Earlier today, Dr. Sarma met Japan’s Parliamentary Vice Minister Akiko Ikuina as he exchanged his views with her on a wide range of issues concerning Assam and Japan. Displaying immense love and respect for Assam’s culture, the minister greeted Chief Minister Dr. Sarma in Assamese on his arrival. The meeting that followed afterwards, highlighted Assam and Japan cooperation in the fields of skilled work force and prevailing opportunities in Japan for Assam’s youth. During the meeting, she conveyed to the Chief Minister about Japan’s intention of offering India particularly Assam’s young and skilled workforce job opportunities in Japan. Dr. Sarma referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a robust friendship between India and Japan, said that the friendly bilateral relations between the two countries are the cornerstones for making the lives of people living in both the nations better.

            It may be noted that Chief Minister Dr. Sarma’s tour to Japan witnessed a series of meetings that the Chief Minister held with the ministers and industry players to create and strengthen the ties for mutual benefits of both Assam and Japan.  He held a productive meeting with Terutoshi Hamano and his team from Toyota Motor Corp. The discussion focused on the establishment of a potential automobile ancillary unit in Assam. Dr. Sarma requested the Toyota authority to expand its present skilling programme footprints at more institutions across the state.

            To reduce the tach gap with advanced economies, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also met Executive Vice President of Tokyo Electron (TEL) one of Japan’s biggest chipmaker company. The company which is a major player in the semiconductor supply chain, specializes in designing equipment that creates chips. Dr. Sarma invited the company to partner with Assam as he drew the attention of TEL to Assam’s upcoming electronic city at Jagiroad which envisaged to be a centre of excellence of end to end semiconductor ecosystem.

            Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also held a productive meeting with the CEO of Mizuho Securities India as he discussed on extending credit linkages to Assam based companies facilitating investments from Japanese firms. Muziho Securities is a leading financial institution, which has the expertise in providing innovative financial solutions and credit facilities. Dr. Sarma invited the company functionaries to Advantage Assam 2.0 and explore opportunities for collaboration. He also met Vice President of Yokogawa Electric Yoshiaki Asakura and discussed business opportunities in Assam. It may mentioned that  Yokogawa Electric is a leading Japanese electrical engineering firm working in Assam through its collaboration with NRL and IOCL. Dr. Sarma asked the company to expand its presence in Assam and support the growing electronic and energy sectors in the state.

            Leaving no stone unturned to attract Japanese investment into Assam, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also had a productive conversation with the Senior Vice President of JICA Hara Shohei and informed him about Assam government’s interests to partner with JICA and JETRO to establish an exclusive industrial park for Japanese company. The discussion also featured on exploring collaboration to establish Assam as a key industrial hub.
