Indian stock markets faced a sharp decline on Friday as headline indices tumbled nearly 2% each in a broad-based sell-off. The Sensex plummeted by 1,345.08 points to reach 73,267.4, while the Nifty50 dropped 416.2 points, touching a low of 22,128.9. This market downturn erased Rs 9.91 lakh crore from investors’ wealth, with the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies standing at Rs 383.18 lakh crore by mid-day, according to provisional exchange data.

Investor sentiment was weighed down by concerns over a potential global trade war and anticipation of the upcoming quarterly GDP report, set to be released later in the day.

Sector-wise, IT, automobiles, and telecom stocks led the losses, with major declines seen in Infosys, Bharti Airtel, TCS, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). In contrast, Coal India, HDFC Bank, Shriram Finance, and Axis Bank emerged as the top gainers.
