On Monday, March 10, 2025, Assam’s Finance Minister Ajanta Neog unveiled the state budget for the 2025-26 financial year in the state assembly, highlighting impressive strides in employment, economic growth, and social welfare.
The government has already delivered nearly 1.2 lakh jobs, surpassing its promise of 1 lakh government positions, with plans to create over 40,000 additional jobs this year. To bolster entrepreneurship, ₹773 crore has been earmarked for the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan scheme. Meanwhile, a new initiative, the Jibon Prerana scheme, will provide ₹2,500 monthly to graduates, aiming to fuel the ambitions of Assam’s youth.
Education and social empowerment remain key focuses. The state is pushing to provincialize eligible schools and enhance conditions for tutors, while the Nijut Moina scheme—credited with transforming the lives of countless girls—will continue to promote higher education and combat child marriage. On the economic front, Assam’s budgetary expenditure has surged by 250%, with capital spending reaching ₹24,964 crore in 2024-25. The state boasts one of India’s lowest Debt-to-GSDP ratios, alongside notable growth in GSDP and per capita income. Unemployment has dropped sharply, and labor force participation has soared.
For women’s welfare, the flagship Orunodoi scheme, benefiting over 37 lakh women, will receive ₹5,000 crore. Additionally, starting April 1, 2025, the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan will launch in Behali with ₹3,038 crore to empower women entrepreneurs. Assam’s budget reflects a blend of ambition and pragmatism, aiming to uplift its people while sustaining economic momentum.
