The Assam government has announced a reduction in electricity rates by Rs 1 per unit for low and middle-class consumers under the Jeevan Dhara and Domestic Category. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog revealed the subsidy in the state budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 on March 10, which is set to take effect from May 1, 2025.
This initiative will benefit 48 lakh consumers across Assam, particularly those consuming up to 120 units of electricity per month. With a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 crore for the year, the move aims to ease the financial burden on households while ensuring affordable electricity for lower and middle-income families.
In another development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the success of the Central government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which has led to the installation of rooftop solar panels in 6,500 households across the state. The solar panels are generating 24 MW of electricity, helping consumers save a significant amount on their electricity bills.
