A firefighting helicopter crashed in a mountainous area of Uiseong County, South Korea, on Wednesday, claiming the life of the pilot, officials confirmed.

According to an official from the Gyeongbuk Fire Service, “The helicopter was battling a wildfire when it went down. Sadly, the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The crash occurred as South Korea struggles to contain wildfires sweeping through its southeastern region, where at least 18 lives have been lost. Efforts to control the blazes have been hampered by dry, gusty winds, which have also led to widespread power outages and road closures. Thousands of firefighters remain on the front lines, working tirelessly to protect lives and property.
