Guwahati has enough ICU beds, Remidisivir to deal with the pandemic currently
Guwahati currently has 150 ICU beds in the three government hospitals dedicated for Covid-19 treatment. Of these 92 are in GMCH, 24 in MMCH and 38 more in the Kalapahar Covid Hospital, informed health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference on 26th April. Meanwhile there are 52 patients in ICU as of now.
Sarma said that the government is working on increasing the number of ICU beds in the Silchar and Jorhat Medical College and Hospitals, and the same will be functional by next week.
GMCH currently has a total of 856 beds (both ICU and general)for treating Covid-19 patients. Additionally, there are 120 beds in the Ayurvedic hospital, 94 in Singimari Model Hospital, 65 beds in Sonapur Hospital, 70 in Kalitakuchi Model Hospital, 134 beds in the Kalapahar Hospital and 430 beds in the Sarusajai Stadium facility. Thus Guwahati has a total of 2120 beds currently.
Sarma further added, ” We had planned to construct a hospital at Khanapara that would have cost Rs. 47 crores. To curb expenses we will be constructing a facility with 254 ICUs at a vacant land near the GMCH parking lot in just Rs. 8 crores. The same can be completed in just 10 days as the structure is already there.”
He said that within 10 to 15 days another 268 ICU beds can be set-up depending on requirement.
Assam currently has a stock of 25000 Remidisivir injections. From today onwards the government has informed all private hopitals to collect the injection from GMCH when required. “However, we have set a condition that the private hospitals cannot charge more than Rs. 1568 from public,” Sarma added.
Another 1000 pieces have been reserved for Assamese people residing in other states as of now.
