The devastating floods in Assam continue to claim lives, with the death toll now reaching 93. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two more individuals, including a child, lost their lives in Karimganj district over the past 24 hours.
While the flood situation shows marginal improvement with receding water levels in some areas, nearly 5.98 lakh people across 18 districts remain affected. The hardest-hit districts include Cachar, Dhubri, and Nagaon, with Cachar alone accounting for 115,900 affected individuals.
“115900 people are affected in Cachar district followed by 81497 people in Dhubri district, 76012 people in Nagaon, 58928 people in Goalpara, 54577 people in Dhemaji, 50966 people in Golaghat, 47024 people in Sivasagar district,” said in the ASDMA flood report.
The deluge continues to impact 1,342 villages in 52 revenue circles, submerging 25,367.61 hectares of crop area. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri, as well as the Burhidihing and Disang rivers, are still flowing above danger levels.
Over 58,000 people have sought refuge in 172 relief camps and distribution centers across 13 districts. The floods have also taken a toll on livestock, affecting 283,712 domestic animals.
In the last 24 hours, floodwaters have washed away 232 animals, fully damaged 161 houses, and partially damaged 6,663 houses. Thirteen roads have also been affected.
The Kaziranga National Park has been particularly hard hit, with 196 animals, including 10 rhinos, losing their lives. The park authorities have managed to rescue 143 animals, including two rhino calves and two elephant calves. However, 26 forest camps in the park remain submerged.
