In a move to support Assam’s rich cultural heritage, the state government has approved a financial package of ₹1.5 lakh for each of the 3,000 Bihu committees across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on Monday while addressing the media in New Delhi.

The funds, cleared by the Finance Department, are expected to be disbursed within the next two to three days. “We have today sanctioned ₹1.5 lakh for Bihu committees from the Finance Department. The committees will get the money in the next two to three days,” said Sarma.

The assistance is part of the state’s annual support initiative aimed at enhancing the celebrations of Bihu, one of Assam’s most significant cultural festivals.

However, Sarma clarified that due to the Model Code of Conduct being in effect for the upcoming panchayat elections, no new applications for financial support will be accepted this year. “Because of the Model Code of Conduct in place for the panchayat elections, we cannot accept any new applications. Only the 3,000 committees that have received support in previous years will be eligible,” he stated.

This step highlights the government’s effort to promote traditional festivities while maintaining compliance with election guidelines. The financial aid is expected to help Bihu committees conduct various events and celebrations, keeping the spirit of Assam’s cultural identity alive.
