Guwahati, July 6 (NKTV): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today unveiled a statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee at Barpeta Road in presence of Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
“We bow in reverence to founder of Jan Sangh Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 120th Jayanti” the CM said.
“Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a great lover of Assam, introduced study of Assamese language in Calcutta University where he became the youngest VC at the age of 33” stated Sarma in a post on Twitter. “We all in Assam should know about his contribution to promotion of Assamese language” he added.
“In the words of great freedom fighter Pushpalata Das, Assam could not have been saved by Gopinath Bardoloi alone from merging with East Pakistan without active help from Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Sarat Chandra Bose” the CM stated, adding “It is unfortunate that SP Mookerjee’s tremendous role in saving Assam from being attached to then East Pakistan during Grouping is not known to many in our state”.
