Celebration of Bhaxa Gaurav Saptah and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Diwas at Chennai

The Assamese community in Chennai came together on 9th Nov, 2024 to celebrate two significant events—Bhaxa Gaurav Saptah and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Diwas—at #AssamBhawanChennai, Organized by Assam Bhawan Chennai, Directorate of Cultural Affairs. Govt. of Assam and Assam Association Chennai.
The event, which attracted prominent personalities from the Assamese and NorthEastern communities, was a vibrant reflection of Assam’s rich cultural heritage.

Bhaxa Gaurav Saptah, a week-long celebration dedicated to the recognition of the Assamese as a Classical language. It was a time for the community to honor their linguistic roots and promote the preservation of Assamese culture. This week focuses on the contributions of scholars, poets, and writers who have enriched the Assamese literary landscape. The celebrations included recitations, discussions, singing and dance performances, offering a platform for the youth and adults to engage with the language and deepen their understanding of Assamese language and culture.

In addition to Bhaxa Gaurav Saptah, the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Diwas was observed in tribute to the legendary singer, composer, and filmmaker Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, known as the “Brad of Brahmaputra.” Hazarika’s songs, which transcend regional boundaries, are beloved by millions, and his influence continues to inspire generations. At the event, a special program featured renditions of his famous songs, including “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” and “Dil Hoom Hoom Kare,” keeping his musical legacy alive.

The event was graced by esteemed guests such as WapangToshi, the President of the Northeast Welfare Association & NCF and Mr Prithiviraj Singh Tamo, President of Chennai Manipur Forum. Both delivered a motivating speech on the importance of preserving cultural traditions and fostering unity among the diverse communities of Northeast India. Other prominent figures from the Assamese community were also in attendance, including poets, artists, students, working professionals.

This celebration not only honored the memory of Dr.Bhupen Hazarika but also reinforced the shared commitment of the Northeast community to celebrate and preserve their unique linguistic and cultural identity.
