The Assam Assembly descended into turmoil on Monday, March 24, following an alleged attack on Deputy Speaker Numal Momin by Congress MLA Nurul Huda just outside the legislative building. The incident sparked a heated clash between ruling party members and the opposition, ultimately forcing an early adjournment of the session.

The drama unfolded as Congress lawmakers arrived at the Assembly dressed in black, protesting against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. Kurmi had reportedly hurled verbal abuse at opposition MLAs and attempted to physically confront them inside the House during the previous week. In response, Congress leaders staged a sit-in outside the Speaker’s chamber, demanding strict action against Kurmi.

Tensions escalated when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Momin had been hospitalized due to an assault by Huda. However, this assertion was quickly undermined as Momin was seen actively participating in the session shortly before Sarma’s statement, casting doubt on the allegations. Speaker Biswajit Daimary intervened, directing officials to investigate the incident and uncover the truth.

The opposition—comprising Congress, AIUDF, and CPI(M)—vociferously condemned Kurmi’s behavior and dismissed the ruling party’s claims about Momin as baseless. Meanwhile, the treasury benches, led by Sarma, hit back with accusations of their own, asserting that Momin, a prominent tribal leader, had been targeted by opposition members. The mounting disorder forced the Speaker to suspend proceedings for 10 minutes in an effort to regain control.

As the dust settles, all eyes are now on the outcome of the Speaker’s inquiry into the alleged attack and the broader issue of maintaining civility in the Assam Assembly.
