CM Dr. Sarma visits SMCH, takes stock of construction activities

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited Silchar Medical College and Hospital and dedicated the 20-bed Cardiology ICU to the service of the patients at the medical college in Silchar.

It may be noted that the Chief Minister on the last leg of his three day Barak valley tour visited the medical college and hospital and besides inaugurating the Cardio ICU unit, took stock of the ongoing construction of the 535-bed emergency building, which will become an annexe to the current structure. It may also be noted that with the completion of the new emergency building which is likely to be inaugurated in November next year, the total bed capacity of the hospital will go up to around 1885 from the existing 1350 including ICU beds.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also assessed the planned facilities in the new building, where five departments will be relocated to improve patient care including critical and emergency. He also said that another building will be constructed in the premises of Silchar Medical College and Hospital with 1000 bed capacity.

Additionally, the Chief Minister evaluated the hospital’s ancillary services, including staff vacancies, considering the needs for the next 10 years. He further directed PWD (Building) officials to prepare a master plan for the hospital’s future expansion.

Guardian Minister in charge of Cachar Jayanta Mallabaruah, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, MLAs Kaushik Rai, Dipayan Chakraborty, Principal Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, and other senior officers of the government were present at the meeting.
