Cyclone Tauktae to intensify into ‘severe cyclonic storm’, 5 states in red alert

The Tauktae cyclone to intensify into a “severe cyclonic storm” likely to hit Gujarat coast by Tuesday. According to the weather department the cyclone Tauktae is likely to intensify further into a “very severe cyclonic storm” within the next 12 hours. For rescue operations more than 50 teams of the NDRF are on stand by in five states – Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra to cope up with the cyclone.

With the cyclone, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected and likely to cause flash floods and landslides in the coastal districts of Kerala, Karnataka and Goa till Sunday and Saurashtra, Kutch in Gujarat on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Indian metrological depratment wrote in twitter “Cyclonic Storm “Tauktae” (pronounced as Tau’Te) over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea: Cyclone Alert for Gujarat & Diu coasts (Yellow message).”

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi will hold a review meet this evening with the red alerted states.
