Delhi High Court transfers coaching centre deaths case to CBI

The Delhi High Court on Friday transferred the investigation case pertaining to the deaths of three UPSC aspirants in Old Rajinder Nagar to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The reason cited for this decision is the seriousness of the incidents and the potential involvement of corruption by public servants.

The High Court has instructed the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to appoint a senior officer to supervise the CBI’s investigation into the tragic deaths of the Civil Services aspirants.

The protests outside the coaching institutes in Rajinder Nagar have persisted for six consecutive days. The demonstrations, which began on July 27, were sparked by the deaths of the three aspirants in a flooding incident at an IAS coaching centre.

In response to the tragedy, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has directed officials to establish four libraries in honor of the deceased. As per the proposed plan, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will set up these public libraries in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai.

In a related judicial proceeding, the Tis Hazari court on Thursday granted bail to Manuj Kathuria, the SUV driver accused of causing the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants. Kathuria was alleged to have driven his vehicle recklessly, leading to water flooding the basement of the coaching centre.

Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Kumar-IV granted Kathuria bail on a bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount. However, due to procedural delays, Kathuria’s bail bond could not be furnished as the duty judicial magistrate had concluded the day’s session by the time the order was processed.

Judge Kumar noted that Kathuria appeared to have been implicated with excessive zeal, despite being charged under Section 105 of the BNS, a non-bailable offense.
