The final location survey for the proposed railway line from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan has been successfully completed, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been submitted for further approval, according to an official from NF Railways.
The project aligns with Indian Railways’ efforts to support the Prime Minister’s “Act East Policy” and “Neighbourhood First Policy.” It aims to improve cross-border connectivity and strengthen bilateral ties between India and Bhutan. The new railway line will enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges, benefiting both nations, said a statement from the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NF Railways.
The project was announced by Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, during the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit held in Guwahati on February 25, 2025.
The proposed 69.04 km railway line will connect Kokrajhar station in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, with an estimated cost of Rs. 3,500 crore. The plan includes the construction of six new stations—Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu—along with 2 major bridges, 29 large bridges, 65 small bridges, 1 road overbridge, 39 road underbridges, and 2 viaducts.
Once completed, the railway line will provide Bhutan with its first-ever railway connection, improving transportation and positioning Bodoland as a major trade and transit hub. The project is expected to significantly boost the local economy, making the Assam-Bhutan railway line a key driver of long-term growth and development in the region.
