New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has made an early exit from the Gujarat Titans camp after sustaining a groin injury during the franchise’s away clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6. The 28-year-old has returned to New Zealand for treatment, with the extent of the injury and recovery timeline yet to be officially confirmed.
Phillips, who was picked up by the Titans at his base price of INR 2 crore during the auction, was considered a valuable asset following his standout performances in the recent Champions Trophy. Despite not featuring in any matches for the Titans this season, his reputation for electric fielding and versatility with bat and ball made him a promising addition to Shubman Gill’s side.
During the Champions Trophy, co-hosted by Pakistan and Dubai, Phillips impressed with his acrobatic fielding displays and consistent all-round performance, helping New Zealand reach the final before narrowly losing to India.
This marks the second departure from the Titans’ overseas contingent, with South African pacer Kagiso Rabada also having left the squad due to a personal emergency. There is no confirmed timeline for Rabada’s return.
The Titans currently have five overseas players available: Jos Buttler, Sherfane Rutherford, Rashid Khan, Gerald Coetzee, and Karim Janat. Each IPL team is allowed a maximum of eight foreign players in their squad, leaving room for potential reinforcements.
Despite these setbacks, Gujarat Titans continue their strong run in the 2025 IPL season. The defending champions sit at the top of the points table with four wins in five games, their only defeat coming in the season opener against Punjab Kings. The team will face Lucknow Super Giants next, in an away fixture scheduled for Saturday, April 12.
