The Union Government has rolled out a significant salary upgrade for Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, approving a 24% pay increase effective from April 1, 2023. This decision, detailed in an official circular from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, adjusts not only their monthly salaries but also daily allowances and pensions for both current and former MPs, aligning the hike with the Cost Inflation Index as per the Income-Tax Act.

According to the announcement, MPs will now see their monthly earnings rise from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 1,24,000. While the circular mentions a revision in daily allowances, it appears the amount remains unchanged at Rs 2,500, suggesting a possible clarification might follow. Meanwhile, former MPs have something to cheer about as well—their pensions are jumping from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000 per month. This move, rooted in the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act of 1954, reflects the government’s effort to keep parliamentary compensation in step with rising costs.
