The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to establish a state-of-the-art multi-purpose space facility in Assam to boost India’s space capabilities and promote space education in the region.
This facility will play a vital role in safeguarding the country’s space assets, enhancing weather advisory services, and supporting various space-related activities in the state. During a recent site visit, Keshab Mahanta, Assam’s Minister for Revenue, Disaster Management, IT, Science & Technology, and Climate Change, along with V. Narayanan, Secretary of the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman, assessed the location for the project.
ISRO’s Chairman highlighted that an advanced radar system would be set up at the NETRA project site within the year. This radar will have the ability to monitor objects in space up to a range of 2000 km and detect objects as small as ten centimeters. The entire project is expected to take four years to complete, with the NETRA center dedicated to continuous surveillance of satellites, space debris, and potential space threats.
Furthermore, the Assam government has proposed the creation of a space museum in the region, a proposal that ISRO has expressed its full support for and looks forward to collaborating on.
