Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Jorhat-Dibrugarh section of the National Highway is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2025. The update was shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account following a key meeting with Krishan Kumar, Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), held on April 7 in New Delhi.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to its development agenda, CM Sarma stated, “This is another promise given to the people which will be fulfilled much before the elections.” The meeting focused on reviewing the progress of several ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects critical to Assam’s growth.
Among the flagship initiatives discussed was the construction of a four-lane, 19.28-kilometer bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya. Once completed, this bridge will be the longest in India.
Also on the agenda was the ambitious ₹25,000 crore Guwahati-Silchar Expressway project, which aims to drastically reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity between Assam’s key cities.
Other significant proposals reviewed included the region’s first underwater tunnel between Numaligarh and Gohpur, and the widening of national highway corridors from Baihata Chariali-Tezpur to Gohpur-Kulajan.
The discussions highlighted the strategic importance of these projects, not only for regional development and connectivity but also for enhancing national security across Northeast India.
