The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a statutory resolution affirming the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, a state grappling with ongoing ethnic unrest. Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the resolution, reiterating the government’s commitment to restoring peace and order in the region.

In his address, Shah reported that no violence had occurred in Manipur over the past four months, though he acknowledged that the situation was still not fully stable. “The situation is under control,” he stated, highlighting ongoing efforts to engage with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to foster a peaceful resolution. However, Shah expressed concern over the continued presence of displaced individuals in relief camps.

Shah also discussed the tragic loss of at least 260 lives due to ethnic clashes, which began after an order by the state’s High Court. He assured the House that central forces had been deployed promptly following the order to prevent further violence.

After the resolution’s passage, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed hope for peace in Manipur but questioned the timing of the debate, which took place in the early hours of the morning. Other opposition leaders, including DMK MP Kanimozhi, criticized the government for delaying the discussion on such a crucial issue, accusing it of showing indifference towards the plight of the people in Manipur.

President’s Rule has been in effect in the state since February 13, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
