Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi announced as new chief of Army Staff

It is a matter of great pride and honor for the Assam Rifles to have Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, as the next Chief of Army Staff. General Dwivedi, a distinguished officer with an illustrious career, has held numerous command and staff appointments at various levels both within India and abroad. Notably, he has served twice with the Assam Rifles, once as Sector Commander in the 26 Sector Pallel, Manipur, and later as Inspector General Assam Rifles (East).

During his tenure as the Sector Commander of the 26 Assam Rifles Sector in Pallel, from 27 May 2011 to 13 December 2012, General Dwivedi demonstrated exemplary leadership and strategic acumen. His tenure is marked with over 150 Apprehensions, 173 Surrenders and seven insurgents being neutralised. His contributions to the sector were marked by significant achievements in operational effectiveness and community engagement.

Following his role in Pallel, General Dwivedi commanded the IGAR (East) from 19 Mar 2017 to 31 Oct 2018. Geographically, IGAR (East) is the largest in terms of area, covering the states of Tripura, Mizoram, four districts of South Assam, and the Jiribam district of Manipur. During his tenure, General Dwivedi was instrumental in addressing and mitigating insurgency challenges in South Assam and Jiribam. He successfully executed numerous Civic Action Projects across the area of responsibility, significantly impacting the overall well-being and development of local communities.

General Dwivedi’s tenure as IGAR (East) was also marked by his efforts to ensure synergy with political and civil authorities. He effectively managed perception, conceptualized comprehensive development initiatives, and addressed core issues through people-friendly strategies.

One of General Dwivedi’s notable contributions was the publication of a comprehensive Compendium on Indo-Myanmar Border Management during his tenure as Inspector General Assam Rifles (East). This compendium has provided stakeholders with valuable insights into the peculiarities and challenges of managing the Indo-Myanmar border. It outlines the roles and participation necessary to achieve the common goals of sustainable and efficient border management, facilitating both the movement of people and the growth of trade.
