MHA invites applications for Indian citizenship from non-Muslims refugees in five states

The Government of India on Friday had invited non-Muslims like Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists hailing from countries like Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan living in 13 districts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Punjab to apply for citizenship of India.

The union home ministry had issued a notification in this effect for immediate implementation of the order under the Citizenship Act 1955 and rules framed under the law in 2009. However the rules under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is yet to framed by the government of India.

In the notification it was written “The application for registration as citizen of India or grant of certificate of naturalisation as citizen of India under the said rules (Citizenship Rules, 2009) shall be made by the applicant online.”

Earlier when CAA was enacted huge agitation had erupted across the country especially in Northeast and national capital of Delhi. However, the new notification did not have the any such invitation from the state of Assam.
