For the first time since India’s independence, Mizoram has achieved a landmark in its infrastructure journey with the completion of a railway bridge near Sairang, linking the state capital, Aizawl, to the country’s expansive rail network.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw celebrated the breakthrough on Thursday, posting a video of the newly finished bridge on X and hailing it as a game-changer for Mizoram’s connectivity. The rail line, stretching 51.38 km from Bairabi on the Assam border to Sairang near Aizawl, is set to be inaugurated in July. With Rs. 7,714 crore already invested and a total projected cost of Rs. 8,215 crore, this ambitious project promises to transform the region.
Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena recently updated Parliament on the progress, confirming that the railway is on the verge of becoming operational, seamlessly integrating Aizawl into India’s national rail system. The line is segmented into four parts: Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang, paving the way for smoother access across the state.
This development is poised to unlock a wealth of opportunities for Mizoram, enhancing trade, travel, and economic growth. The railway link is expected to reshape the state’s socio-economic landscape, marking a new era of connectivity and progress for its people.
