MS Dhoni will once again don the captain’s hat for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament with an elbow fracture. Head Coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the development on Thursday (April 10), a day before CSK’s home clash with Kolkata Knight Riders.
Gaikwad, 28, picked up the injury while facing Tushar Deshpande during CSK’s match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30. Despite managing to play in the following two games against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, further scans have revealed a fracture that sidelines him for the rest of the season.
“Unfortunately, Ruturaj will miss the remainder of the tournament,” Fleming said. “He’s been playing through pain, but an MRI confirmed the fracture. We’re really disappointed, especially knowing how much he’s contributed.”
With Gaikwad out, CSK has turned to its most iconic figure. The 43-year-old Dhoni, who had stepped away from captaincy at the start of the 2024 season, is set to lead the side once again.
In classic Dhoni fashion, the decision was swift and selfless. “He understands the team’s situation. There was no hesitation on his part,” Fleming said. “Ruturaj didn’t want to step down either, but the injury leaves us no choice.”
Gaikwad’s absence is a major blow to a struggling CSK side that has lost four of its first five games this season. His consistent run-scoring form—being the team’s top scorer in three of the last four seasons—makes the setback even more damaging for a team battling form and rhythm.
As for potential replacements, Fleming said the team will first look internally. “We have some solid players in the squad who’ve been with us for a while. We’ll assess the options and make decisions that benefit us both now and in the long term,” he added.
Dhoni, who has led CSK in 235 of their 268 matches, brings with him a legacy of calm leadership and tactical brilliance. Under his captaincy, CSK has lifted five IPL titles and made it to the final on ten occasions—a testament to the consistency and culture he has cultivated over the years.
