Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Mark Carney on his election as the new Prime Minister of Canada and extended his best wishes to the Liberal Party for their electoral win.
In a message posted on X, Modi highlighted the strong democratic values shared by India and Canada and expressed optimism about deepening bilateral cooperation. “India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,” he wrote.
Mark Carney, a respected economist and former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, was selected by the Liberal Party to succeed Justin Trudeau. During his campaign, Carney made rebuilding ties with India a priority, emphasizing the need for stronger cooperation between democracies.
Speaking in Calgary, Carney said, “What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India.”
He also recently described the India-Canada relationship as “incredibly important” and suggested both nations have a significant role to play in shaping a more open and cooperative global economy.
Carney’s international experience includes leading Canada through the 2008 financial crisis and managing the UK economy during Brexit. In 2020, he was appointed the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.
According to his official profile, Carney is focused on revitalizing Canada’s economy and strengthening its role on the global stage. “Mark offers the proven leadership and real plan we need to deliver change for our party and our country, and to build the strongest economy in the G7,” the profile states.
