Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025 in Guwahati, where he lauded the significant growth of Assam’s economy under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. Addressing a gathering of key dignitaries and industry leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Modi spoke about the region’s transformative role in India’s development.

Doubling of Assam’s Economy
PM Modi started by highlighting the remarkable growth of Assam’s economy, noting that it had doubled to Rs 6 lakh crore during the tenure of the BJP in the state. “This is the effect of the ‘double-engine’ government,” he remarked, crediting the political stability and development initiatives for this progress. He also congratulated the Assam government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their contributions to the state’s advancement.

Eastern India’s Role in National Development
Prime Minister Modi spoke passionately about the vital role Eastern India, especially the Northeast, has played in shaping India’s history and how it will continue to lead the charge in the country’s future. “Eastern India has always played a significant role in the prosperity of the country. Today, the Northeast is poised to show its immense potential to the world,” he said, stressing the importance of initiatives like Advantage Assam in linking the state’s growth to global opportunities.

He added that the development of Assam is part of a larger vision to position Eastern India at the forefront of India’s growth story. Modi reflected on his visit to Assam in 2013, recalling how he had predicted that Assam would soon be recognized as a key economic player, with people reading “A for Assam.”

Institutional Reform, Infrastructure, and Innovation
In his address, Modi emphasized the combination of institutional reforms, industry, infrastructure, and innovation as the foundation of India’s ongoing development. He pointed out that significant peace accords and long-pending border-related issues had been resolved in the past decade, ensuring greater stability in the region. “Every citizen, every youth in Assam is working tirelessly for the state’s progress,” Modi said.

He further highlighted the government’s focus on improving the ease of doing business in the region and creating an ecosystem that fosters industrial and innovative growth. He also mentioned the substantial investments in infrastructure that are fueling the country’s economic expansion, including air connectivity projects and a boost to Assam’s railway budget.

A Vision for Assam’s Future
PM Modi spoke about Assam’s ambitious target of taking its economy to $150 billion by 2030, expressing confidence that the state could achieve this goal with continued growth and development. He also took pride in the efforts made to improve Assam’s infrastructure, particularly in terms of air and rail connectivity.

Underlining the significant investments made in infrastructure, Modi pointed out the creation of several new bridges on the Brahmaputra River, including one named after the iconic singer Bhupen Hazarika. The Prime Minister also noted that Assam’s railway budget had increased more than fourfold under the current government, from Rs 2,100 crore between 2009-2014 to Rs 10,000 crore now.

Strengthening Global Connectivity
In his concluding remarks, Modi touched on India’s growing global presence, highlighting free trade agreements with various regions of the world. He noted how these agreements are enhancing India’s connectivity with East Asia and the new India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, bringing new trade and investment opportunities.

PM Modi concluded his speech by emphasizing the strengthening global trust in India, remarking, “Today, we are all here in Assam, on the land of Maa Kamakhya, which symbolizes the spiritual and cultural richness of this region.”

The Advantage Assam 2.0 summit marks a significant milestone in Assam’s journey toward economic transformation, with key announcements and discussions set to further boost the state’s development in the coming years. The Prime Minister’s remarks reaffirmed Assam’s place at the heart of India’s growth trajectory, as the state continues to rise as an economic powerhouse in the Northeast.
