Rekha Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), took the oath of office today as Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister. This follows the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) return to power in the national capital, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 10-year tenure. The BJP’s triumph marks a significant shift, ending over 26 years of the party’s absence from power.
The inauguration ceremony took place at the iconic Ramlila Ground, where a host of prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Ministers from 20 states, gathered to celebrate the occasion. Gupta, who was elected Leader of the House by the BJP legislature party on Wednesday evening, also met Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, and formally staked her claim to form the new government. At 50, Gupta marks a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape.
