The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working closely with telecom service providers to enhance communication infrastructure for the upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Preparations are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for the millions of devotees and visitors expected to attend the event.
Telecom Upgrades in Prayagraj City
Within Prayagraj, 126 kilometers of optical fiber have been laid to reinforce the telecom backbone. To enhance coverage, 328 new towers and masts have been installed, supported by the deployment of 575 new Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). Additionally, 1,462 existing BTS units have been upgraded to strengthen mobile connectivity across the city.
Connectivity in the Mela Area
In the Mela area, which will host the main event, 192 kilometers of optical fiber have been deployed for reliable network coverage. To manage the high demand for communication services, 78 mobile transportable towers (CoWs) and 150 outdoor Small Cell solutions are being implemented. The network infrastructure includes 352 new BTS units and upgrades to 50 existing units, enhancing connectivity in crowded zones.
Public Spaces and Highways
Efforts are being made to optimize telecom services in key public spaces, including transport hubs such as railway stations, bus terminals, and airports. Highways and major routes leading to Prayagraj are also being equipped with strengthened telecom coverage, particularly in areas like the Green Corridor, which is critical for traffic management during the event.
Citizen Services and Public Safety
Telecom providers have established 53 help desks in the Mela area to assist visitors with concerns like reporting fraudulent communications and blocking lost or stolen mobile devices. Radiation testing of telecom towers has been conducted to ensure compliance with safety standards. Emergency communication platforms, such as Cell Broadcast Alerts and the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), will enable the dissemination of disaster warnings and public service announcements throughout the event.
Disaster Management Centers
Three disaster management centers operated by major telecom providers, including Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vi, have been set up within the Mela area. These centers will maintain emergency communication channels and provide support during crisis situations.
