Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He will take over from Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year term concludes on February 28.

The Finance Ministry invited applications for the position, setting a deadline of February 17. Unlike his predecessor Buch, who served a single term, her predecessors Ajay Tyagi and UK Sinha received extensions, with Tyagi serving for four years and Sinha for six years.

Pandey brings a wealth of experience to his new role, backed by a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Before his SEBI appointment, Pandey was the Secretary of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance and also served as the Finance Secretary. He previously led three key departments: the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), and the Department of Personnel and Training.

In addition to his roles at the Union Government, Pandey has held various significant positions in the Odisha State Government and worked with the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
